Catwalk

Printmaking demands careful consideration and precision; it is an unforgiving medium that requires accepting your mistakes and working them into the final piece. Similar to my work with clay, linoleum printing necessitates cutting away the smooth layers, going deeper to allow the full image to come to into focus. As in life, errors are made — and they must then be woven into the fabric of the work. Furthermore, linoleum printing is reminiscent of living and how when we dig-deeper something is revealed that might not be apparent at first glance.

Cat Walk is a series of hand-pulled linoleum prints that depict cats in haute couture costumes and other attire. The images are bold and striking, with high-contrast color schemes. They invite the viewer in to look closer, as they are not exceptionally large. Drawing on inspiration from fashion, cats, saints and German folklore, these works show solitary, powerful, beguiling creatures in a variety of positions. The cat is substituted for woman, or pussy. The series explores the way women have been depicted — their vulnerability and their strength, whether they’re wearing high fashion or an astronaut suit. The body position is often confrontational, challenging the viewer while offering a delicacy and strength through line quality and texture.
